George Hurrell (1904-1992) was noted for his mastery of studio lighting and ability to capture Hollywood stars at the height of glamor. His career took off once he photographed Norma Shearer as a vixen rather than the wholesome ingenue the public was use to. MGM production chief, Irving Thalberg, upon seeing the image of his wife, Norma, immediately hired Hurrell as MGM’s official lead portrait photographer, and history was made.
