Purvis Young, a prolific self taught artist based in Florida died yesterday at the age of 67.
I remember first coming across Young’s work in the early 1990’s in New York City. Being a graduate of Parsons, until the discovery of Young, I held the rather nose-in-the-air attitude that only educated artists could produce masterpieces. Frankly, I found his work to be miles better than the work of most trained artists. Young’s work led me to delve into the world of what main stream galleries term Outsider Art. To this day I am still inspired by artists such as Adolf Wolfli, Rosemarie Koczy, Jacob Lawrence, and Romare Bearden.
